Update on Mattie Demmer and the Rose Garden

I found a picture from the Quincy Area Historic Photo Collection regarding the Rose Garden that I wrote about a few weeks ago.

The photo contained the following information:

“Doc” Buhl orchestra at Rosegarden in Hannibal and also Highland Park in Quincy in 1924 Picture 1922. Trumpet, “Dip” Hoppe; Drums, Benny Murch; Sax, “Si” Hawk; Piano, Jack Kine; Banjo, Axel J. “Doc” Buhl.

Buhl came from Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1922 or 1923 to Hannibal to play Rose Garden ballroom, married its manager Mattie Demmer, joined Local 265, played Highland Park. Orin Seifert played piano here; Ted Conway on sax, Hal Emerson on drums, Paul Kruger on sax. Others later: Pat Wolfe, Art Brown, “Diz” and “Lank” Menge. Rose Garden in Hannibal, 609 Broadway, was from 1918 to 1940.
