Christmas card photos bring back memories of days gone by

Del Anderson of Ogden, Utah, has only been to Hannibal once, yet he has a vast collection of memories, photos and newspaper clippings regarding Hannibal and its people.

His mother, Kathryn Little, grew up in Hannibal, attending school here until her early high school years, when she moved with her parents to Utah.

Kathryn maintained ties with her hometown and with the friends she left behind. Each year, at Christmas, she would exchange photo cards with these friends. She kept the photos that her friends from Hannibal sent, making notes on each as to who they were and what years the photos were taken.

Now that his mother is deceased, Del has been sorting through these photos and placing them in albums. He has also been sharing copies with me for use on this web site.

Several stories have already been written, thanks to the information and photos he has shared, and more will be coming in the future.

Today, I want to share photos of Margaret Waide, Kathryn’s childhood friend. Margaret was born April 18, 1916, in Hannibal, to James Edward and Alta May Bounds Waide. She married Guy E. Zinn on Aug. 18, 1935. He died on June 26, 1988. They had one son, Gene M. Zinn of New London.

Mrs. Zinn retired as the credit manager for the J.C. Penney Store in Hannibal. She died March 16, 2012, at the age of 95.

The 1957 Hannibal city directory lists Guy E. Zinn as a switchman for the CB&Q railroad. He and Margaret were living at 1106 Summer Street.
