Babyboomers, who did your grandparents go visit when they needed new eye glasses?

Bobby Heiser, a fifth-generation jeweler, knows the answer to that question. The jewelry store, of course. His great-grandfather and grandfather both fitted glasses at their jewelry stores. Bobby's father was the first in the family to go to school to become a certified optomologist.

Old-time jewelers had frames with removable lenses, and they would interchange the lenses until the vision was clear. Glasses were made of gold or filled gold, so the jewelers could fit and fix the frames.
