You couldn't beat the tenderloins at Abe's Bar and Grill in Hannibal

When the carnival was in town, business was particularly brisk at Abe's Bar and Grill. Carey Toalson remembers preparing tenderloins ahead of time in order to meet the demand. "We'd have to beat out 2,000 tenderloins to get through the week, sometimes more."

Of course, each tenderloin was prepared from scratch, using a secret recipe even Carey - now age 59 - hasn't been able to duplicate.

The aroma of the tenderloins drifted out onto the street, which drew more people into the restaurant at Fourth and Broadway.
