An talent for negative retouching
Retouching negatives was an art, and Kathy Herring Walley remembers that her grandfather, Herrmann Herring, wasn’t very good at it. She would walk the negatives across the street to Sam Friedman, a lawyer whose office was in a second floor space on the east side of the 100 block of South Main Street, Hannibal, Mo., and he would retouch the negatives as necessary.
